Removing ice and snow from the wings and tail of an aircraft, and preventing it forming, is essential for a safe take-off.

Once the de-icing fluid had been applied to an aircraft, it would run off onto the apron. This would then be washed into the sewer as trade effluent.

Mark Stewart, Environment Engineer at Manchester Airports Group, was looking for a more environmentally friendly way of handling this run-off.

Mark thought a large industrial vacuum cleaner could be used to collect the de-icer from the apron and, after a quick Google, found the Big Brute Industrial Vacuum Cleaner.

Big Brute UK recommended the Big Brute Suck & Pump with a front-mounted squeegee. It’s ideal for sucking up liquid waste and its front-mounted floor squeegee cleans large, wet floor areas quickly and easily.

Mark also liked the ability to empty it rapidly through the rear dump valve, or in a more controlled way with its discharge pump. This is ideal for a more controlled recovery into IBCs or containers.

Mark’s trial with the Big Brute Suck &  Pump was a success. It enabled them to  collect the run-off de-icer and process it  so the polyethylene glycol could be reused.

“The Big Brute Suck & Pump performed  remarkably well, picking up liquid and  leaving the apron dry to the touch,” Mark  told us.

“It did exactly what we needed it to do.”
